The Grand Ledge Aquatics Center is proud to roll out their new swim program! Beginning January 2017 all lessons taught will coincide with the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Please look at the descriptions of the classes, your child might be in a higher or possibly a lower level class based on their prior lesson and ability. The class descriptions will describe what will be taught in each level and what each participant must pass to enter into the next level. We are excited to introduce this new program which is endorsed by the American Red Cross and is the National Standard in Swim Lessons. Learning water safety is just one way you can make you and your family safer!

Each child will receive a Swim Lesson Achievement Booklet on your first testing day. We ask that you hold onto this booklet for the remainder of their lessons at Grand Ledge. Your child’s achievement will be recorded at the end of each 8 week session. Please return your booklet to every testing date and keep for your child’s progress. If you should need a new booklet we will be happy to sell you a replacement booklet for $2.

Winter Swim Schedule

Wednesdays ~ January 9th - February 27th (8 Classes)

Saturdays ~ January 12th - March 9th (8 Classes) *** NO class - February 16th ***

Parent and Child Classes (Starfish & Guppies OR Parent Tot)

Parent or guardian must accompany child in the water. One parent/guardian per child. Any child not fully potty trained must wear a swim diaper.

Starfish (ages 6 mo. – 2 years)

Hug position, chin support, shoulder support on the front, cuddle position, hip straddle, shoulder support on the side, cueing, getting wet with toys, getting wet kicking, entry into water by lifting and walking in, water exploration, exit water by using steps and lifting out, and safety.

 

Winter ~ Saturdays   January 12th - March 9th   ***No class 2/16***   9 - 9:30 am   $45

Spring ~     Saturdays     April 13th - May 18th     9 - 9:30 am     $35

 

Guppies (ages 2 – 4 years)

Hip support on the front and back, back support, arm stroke position, enter water from a seated position, rolling over and sliding in, enter water using the ladder, in-water exploration, exit water using side of the pool and ladder, open eyes and retrieve an object below the surface, open eyes and retrieve submerged object, and safety.

Level Classes

Students first experience in the water without a parent.

Pre- Level 1

Enter water by stepping in from the deck or low height in shoulder level-deep water and exit water without assistance, open eyes and retrieve object submerged objects in chest deep water, front body glide 2 lengths, back body glide 2 lengths, back float 5 seconds, recover from a back float or glide to a vertical position, roll from front to back and back to front, motor skills using arms to get through the water unassisted, and safety.

Enter water using steps and exit water using the steps, bobbing 5 times, open eyes and retrieve submerged object from the bottom of the shallow end 2 times, front glide and back glide with recovery positions, back float 5 seconds, arm and hand treading actions, alternating leg action on front and back, alternating arm action on front and back, combined arm and leg action, and safety.

Level 2

Enter the water by stepping in jumping into the side in shallow and deep water, fully submerged and hold breath for 10 seconds, open eyes and retrieve a submerged object 3 times, rotary breathing, front glide, float in a face down position, front float-jellyfish float tuck float, recover from a front float or back glide to a vertical position, back float 15 seconds, rolling from front to back and back to front using arm and leg action, arm and leg action at least 5 body lengths, treading water for 15 seconds, finning arm action on the back and front, combined arm and leg action on the back, and safety.

Enter water by jumping from the side (into deep water) fully submerged, then recover to the surface and return to the side of the pool, headfirst entry from the side of the pool in a sitting position from at least 9 ft. of water, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival float, back float 1 minute, change from vertical or horizontal position in deep water, treading water 1 minute, push off from a streamline position on front with flutter kick and dolphin kick, front crawl 15 yards, breaststroke 15 yards, elementary back stroke 25 yards, scissor kick 15 yards, and safety.

Level 4 

Headfirst entry from side in a compact and stride position, swim underwater 5 body lengths, feet first surface dive, survival swim 1 minute in deep water, front and back crawl with an open turn, treading water using 2 different kicks for 2 minutes, front crawl 25 yards, breaststroke 15 yards, butterfly 15 yards, elementary backstroke 25 yards, sculling 30 seconds, sidestroke 25 yards, and safety.

Level 5

Shallow angle dive from the side with a glide, tuck surface dive, pike surface dive, front and back flip turn while swimming, breaststroke flip turn, tread water 5 minutes, tread water using legs only 2 minutes, front crawl 50 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, butterfly 25 yards, elementary backstroke 50 yards, back crawl 25 yards, back sculling 30 seconds, sidestroke 25 yards, and safety

 

Winter ~ Saturdays   January 12th - March 9th   ***No class 2/16***   12 - 12:45 pm   $55

Spring ~     Saturdays     April 13th - May 18th     12 -12:45 pm     $45

 

Level 6 (Personal Water Safety, Fundamentals of Diving, & Fitness Swimmer)

A combination of all three will be taught during Level 6. Fitness Swimmer requires the following: front crawl 100 yards, elementary backstroke 100 yards, back crawl, 50 yards, breaststroke 50 yards, butterfly 50 yards, retrieving an object 10 7-10 ft. of water, circle swimming, using a pace clock, using a pull buoy while swimming, using fins while swimming, and safety.
