Lifeguard Course

This class provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for 2 years. 

Prerequisites:

1. 15 years old by the last day of class

2. Be able to swim 300 yards continuously

3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs

4. Be able to complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds. The sequence of this event is as follows: start in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, and exit the water without using steps or a ladder.

CLASS OFFERINGS & DESCRIPTIONS

Starfish (ages 6 mo. – 2 years)

While in Starfish parents work with their child on water adjustment through songs and play, practice safe pool entry/exit, getting acclimated to different holds and supports, reaching out front, blowing bubbles, water exploration, as well as water and boat safety.

***PARENT MUST ACCOMPANY CHILD IN WATER***

Saturdays ~     April 13th - May 18th     9 - 9:30 am     $55

 

Guppies (ages 2 – 4 years)

While in Guppies parents continue to work with their child on water adjustment, practice independent pool entry/exit, blowing bubbles and submerging, floating on front and back, gliding through the water on front, swimming on back, and jumping into the water to parent, as well as water and boat safety.

Parent Tot (Ages 6 mo. – 4 years)

Parent Tot is combination of our Starfish and Guppies classes.

While in Parent Tot parents will work with their child on water adjustment through songs and play, practice safe pool entry/exit working towards independence with this skill, getting acclimated to different holds and supports, reaching out front, blowing bubbles and submerging, jumping into the water to parent, water exploration, as well as water and boat safety.

Pre - Level 1

While in pre level 1 we work on water adjustment, safe pool entry/exit, water safety, breath control, floating on front and back, gliding through the water on front, swimming on back, and face submerging.

Level 1 

While in level 1 we work on safe, independent pool entry/exit, water safety, submerging under water, floating on front and back, gliding through the water on front, swimming on our back independently, and jumping into the pool.

Level 2

Prerequisites: Child must be able to swim the width of the pool independently on their back.

While in level 2 we continue to build endurance with independent swimming on their back, breath control while retrieving objects from the bottom of the pool, holding breath for 10 seconds while submerged, introduce arm pulls to swimming on front (crawl stroke), jumping into the pool into deep water, and boat safety.

Level 3

Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to swim the length of the pool independently on their back and swim the width of the pool with adequate crawl stroke.

While in level 3 we continue to build endurance by introducing rhythmic breathing, streamlines, and working on swimming our crawl stroke 25 yards. We will introduce backstroke, elementary backstroke, survival float, treading water, changing directions while swimming, diving, and reaching assists.

Level 4

Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to swim 25 yards of adequate crawl stroke and backstroke, tread water and survival float for 1 minute each, and perform satisfactory elementary backstroke.

While in level 4 we continue to build endurance by swimming our crawl stroke and backstroke 50 yards and our elementary backstroke 25 yards. We will introduce breaststroke, underwater swimming for 15 feet, diving with a spring, open turns, throwing assists, and increase our stamina by preforming our treading water and survival float for 1 1/2 minutes.

Level 5

Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to swim 50 yards of adequate crawl stroke and backstroke, 25 yards of elementary backstroke, tread water and survival float for 1 1/2 minutes each, and be able to perform a knowledge of breaststroke.

While in level 5 we continue to build endurance by swimming our crawl stroke 75 yards,  backstroke and elementary backstroke 50 yards, and breaststroke 25 yards. We will introduce sidestroke, butterfly, flip turns, and surface dives and will continue to increase our stamina by preforming our treading water and survival float for 2 minutes.

Level 6

Prerequisites: Swimmer must be able to swim 75 yards crawl stroke, 50 yards backstroke and elementary backstroke, and 25 yards, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly, as well as tread water and survival float for 2 minutes each.

While in level 6 we continue to build endurance by swimming our crawl stroke and backstroke 100 yards, and backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly 50 yards. We will learn how to fitness swim with circle swimming, using a pace clock, learning about and using flippers, pull buoy, and kick boards appropriately, as well as gaining the ability to swim continuously for 12 minutes. We will introduce the sport of diving, proper stretching techniques, basic approach and hurdle on the diving board, as well as tuck jumps and tuck dives. We also work on personal water safety by retrieving a 10 lb brick from 7 feet of water, treading water for 2 minutes with legs only, 5 minutes survival float, and will perform a disrobing exercise.

Springboard Diving Lessons

Prerequisites: Athletes must be able to swim 25 yards independently without stopping and float for 1 minute or have participated in Level 3 or above at Grand Ledge Aquatics

Springboard diving lessons are for 2nd - 11th grade athletes that would like to learn the basics of the sport of diving. While in this program divers will be learning basic stretching, proper approach and hurdles, front and back dives.

Private Pool Rentals

$150

This is a 2 hour block of time including 15 minutes of set up, 1.5 hours of pool use with lifeguard, and 15 minutes of clean up for no more than 25 swimmers. Non swimmers must have an adult in the water. Additional swimmers and event time is based on availability and at an additional fee.

Water Aerobics
