Comets Claim MHSAA Track and Field Regional Title - Girls' Bring Home Impressive 2nd Place Finish
Posted on 05/19/2025
Our Boys and Girls Track and Field teams both had incredible nights last night at our MHSAA Regional Championship meet in Mason, and I wanted to share some of the highlights.

For the first time since 2008, and only the THIRD TIME in program history, your 2025 Grand Ledge Boys Track and Field were Regional Champions last night! In what started out as a hard fought and tight battle with the Brighton Bulldogs and Holt Rams, the boys blew the meet open, winning with a final score of Grand Ledge-115, Brighton-197, and Holt-87 in the Top 3. Out of 17 Track and FIeld events, the boys scored points in 15 of them! In terms of points scored, Senior Zechariah Jones led the team with 28 points scored by winning the High Jump and 110M Hurdles and reaching 2nd place in the 300M Hurdles, along with helping to bring home an additional 6 points in leading off our 4x100m relay. Our throws crew of Ty Ellis, Jackson Shaltry, Jayxlon McAllister, Omaka Smith, and Max Bernard scored a combined 36 points for the team between the Shot Put and Discus. The win was truly a team effort, though, with all 25 of the boys who competed doing their jobs to bring home the title for their team!

We saw 9 individual Personal Records in extremely windy conditions, and all 4 of our relay teams ran season best times! Individual personal records included:
  • Zechariah Jones-110 Hurdles (#9 All-Time for GLHS)
  • Casius White-110 Hurdles
  • Levi Yeah-200m Dash (#6 All-Time for GLHS)
  • Toby Buckland-Pole Vault
  • Ty Ellis-Shot Put (#7 All-Time for GLHS)
  • Ty Ellis-Discus (He broke his own School Record!)
  • Jaylxon McAllister-Discus (#5 All-Time for GLHS)
  • Jack Bull-Long Jump (#10 All-Time for GLHS)
Our MHSAA State Finals Qualifiers for the Boys include:
  • Zechariah Jones in the 110M Hurdles, the 300M Hurdles, and the High Jump
  • Jack Bull in the Long Jump
  • Ty Ellis and Max Bernard in the Shot Put
  • Ty Ellis, Jackson Shaltry, and Jayxlon McAllister in the Discus
The Girls Track and Field team finished 2nd out of 15 teams at last night's Regional Championship, falling only to an incredibly strong Okemos team that performed exceptionally well. The final score in the Top 3 teams came out to Okemos-104.5, Grand Ledge-81.5, and Brighton 76. Coming into the meet, our projection was for the girls to finish somewhere between 3rd and 5th place, so a 2nd place finish was a huge success; this also now the third year in a row that GL Girls Track and Field has finished in the top 3 in the Regional. Next year the Girls will be on the hunt for their 2nd Regional Championship Title in 4 years. Key individual contributors included Elyse Sanders, Elsa Gomez, Avi Skinner , Michelle Odiase, Zayla Goodrich, Ashlee Whitten, Gracie Huegli, and Katie Blue, along with 4 very strong relay teams.

Our 4x200 and 4x400m relay teams ran season best times last night. Many girls achieved Season or Personal Records in 1 or more events. These individual girls were:
  • Elsa Gomez-800m Run
  • Avi Skinner-800m Run
  • Emily Szczepanek-1600m Run
  • Gracie Huegli-Shot Put and Discus
  • Gabi Joseph-100M Hurdles and 300M Hurdles
  • Kloie Schweer-Long Jump
  • Katie Blue-Pole Vault (Broke her own School Record and earned a ranking of #1 in the State!)
  • Michelle Odiase-200m Dash (Season Record)
  • Ashlee Whitten-Shot Put (Season Record)

We also had a number of girls qualify for the MHSAA State Finals. These were:

Last night was another incredibly special night for the entire Track and Field program, and our kids would never have the opportunities that they do without all of the incredible support of the teachers and staff of Grand Ledge High School, our top-notch athletic department, and our incredible group of community supporters. Thank you as always for your incredible support of our exceptional student-athletes!

If you are able, come watch us wrap up our regular season and contend for Conference Championships this Wednesday at the CAAC Blue Championship this Wednesday at DeWitt High School and support our JV Squad this Thursday at the home GL JV Invitational!
