Congratulations to the Grand Ledge Varsity Pom team on their first ever Class A State Championship!
The Grand Ledge Varsity, JV, and Middle School pom teams competed at the 45th annual Mid-American Pompon State Championships at Eastern Michigan University on February 11, 2024.
For the first time in school history, varsity pompon earned the Class A Division II State Champion title, beating the runner-up, South Lyon East, by 10.5 points and the reigning champions, Midland by 47 points.
The state championship title is the end of the list for the varsity teams most decorated year to date, having already earned Grand Champs at summer camp, first place in varsity hip hop, and a first place at the MPA championships.
"To say this is a dream come true won’t do it justice," said coach Devan Dodge. "The program has been waiting decades for a state title and I couldn’t think of a better team to write history than this one. Since regionals, you could feel the electricity in every practice. They weren’t letting anything get in their way and we knew something special was brewing. This title is not only special to the current team and coaches, but also all of the alumni who paved the way since the team’s inception in the 80’s."
To compete at states for states, teams must attend regional qualifications and obtain the required percentage of total points. At both states and regionals, teams are judged on precision/execution, skill/level of ability, formations, team unity, kickline, showmanship, use of poms, choreography, and overall impression.
“The state championship competition is something they work towards all year long, and it takes an incredible amount of skill and discipline to win," added coach Rachel Brown. "These young women were motivated by their love for the sport and their love for each other. Pompon requires an immense amount of trust, the athletes have to know that their teammate is doing their job and giving their 110% every single time. I am so proud of these dedicated young women, there is no team more deserving of a state championship title than them."
The Varsity Pom team will perform one final time this season at halftime of the February 16th Varsity Boys Basketball Game!
Congratulations Comet Varsity Pompon!
