Another year and another Diamond Classic Championship appearance for the Grand Ledge Comets. They squared off against the Mason Bulldogs who were looking for their first Classic title.

The Comets let their experience shine through early as Seniors Braedon Stoakes and Aaron West walked to lead off the game. Junior Logan Hylek then singled to left scoring Stoakes and the Comets have a quick 1-0 lead. After a lineout, West and Hylek scored on back-to-back wild pitches and the Comets jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead.

Junior Brayden Denny got the Championship start for the Comets and came out throwing strikes, setting down the Bulldogs in order in the first.

The Comet bats continued in the second as Senior Payton Wieber led off with a walk followed by a single by Sophomore Noah Warren. Stoakes drove both of them home with a double off the wall in left-center. Stoakes later scored on a sacrifice fly from West. 6-0 Comets.

Denny was once again untouched in the second.

Sophomore Kaden Nowak lined a double to right-center in the third, later scoring on a single by Senior Logan Ashley to extend the Comet lead.

Denny would allow his first baserunner in the fourth inning on a 2-out walk, but the runner was stranded. The Bulldogs recorded their first hit to leadoff the fifth inning. Sophomore Noah Warren relieved Denny with 2-outs in the fifth, and picked off a runner at first to get out of a jam to keep the score at 7-0 GL.

The Comets were held scoreless until the sixth inning, when they scored four runs, led by singles from Junior Landen Ashley, Warren, Stoakes and a bases clearing triple from West.

The Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the sixth but the mercy rule was still in effect as the Comet secured their 28th Diamond Classic Title.

The Comets improve to 26-5-1 on the season

The Comets will face Richland Gull Lake in the Regional on Wednesday, June 5 at East Lansing High School @ 5pm
