Race Summary Coaching Legends Classic 9-29-18

The Grand Ledge Girls Cross Country team had their best race of the season at the Coaching Legends Invite in Brighton on Saturday Sept 29.  Every Comet who ran either had a season best time or a lifetime best time.  “I was happy with how the girls raced today.  Little by little, they are figuring out how to compete smarter and with greater levels of determination.  They are moving in a positive direction” explained Coach Fred Hutchinson.  The Comets finished 12th in the 21 team field that included six teams ranked in the top 15 the state and a host of other quality programs.  The Comets were led by sophomore Grace Buckland who ran just a few seconds of her lifetime best with a time of 19:06, good enough for 13th in the field of 168 runners.  Sophomore Ella Baryo was the next Comet across the line with a lifetime best of 20:40 and a 60th place finish.  Junior Courtney Hughes was just 9 seconds behind Baryo in 69th place.  Junior Megan Schafer ran her best race of the season with a time of 21:08 in 85th place and Sophomore Ashley Witham closed out the Comet scoring equaling her lifetime best time of 21:18 and 95th place.  Senior Ainsley Vanderlaan  also had a lifetime best effort of 21:24 in 97th place.  “I really thought that all of these girls raced considerably better today than they have this year.  If they can close the gap between themselves as we get into our championship meets, then I think they have a chance to do achieve some great things this season”. The seventh Comet across the line was junior Kelsey Kehren who struggled a bit during the race today but still was able to turn in a season best performance of 21:35.

In the Junior Varsity Race, Freshman Adelin Patterson led the way to a 7th place finish in the 15 team field with her lifetime best effort of 22:14 and a 21st place finish in the 239 runner race.  “Addy did a great job today, a really big breakthrough for her” praised Hutchinson.  Among other highlights for the Comet JV squad included the performance of freshman Jenna Hubbert who ran her best time of her career by over 2 minutes, clocking in a time of 23:08.  Senior Sharon Piedra-Vargas was just ahead of Hubbert with a season best time of 23:01. Junior Natalie Wallas and Senior Melanie Vukovich closed out the scoring for the Comet’s JV squad with season best efforts as well.

The Comets travel to Portage on Sat Oct 6 for the Portage Invitational.
