Comets Defeat St. Johns in Swim Home Opener

The Varsity Swimming & Diving squad jumped on top of the visiting Red Wings from St Johns in the first event and never looked back en route to their first win of the season by the score of 117-67. 

Kicking off the evening was the 200 Medley Relay which was won by the quartet of senior Isabel Lee, juniors Grace Weston & Lola Mull & senior Abby Ford with a time of 1:54.00. The second event of the night was a fantastic race between Comet freshman Alyssa Rainsberger & junior Dani Ries in the 200 Freestyle. Rainsberger used a fantastic 3rd 50 to pull even and raced home to narrowly out touch her teammate 2:04.14 to 2:04.51. 

In the 200 IM Abby Ford returned to claim the top spot with a lifetime best time of 2:14.27. Rounding out the top 3 was sophomore Nicole Stensen in 2nd with a time of 2:27.21 & in 3rd, sophomore Olivia Vanderlaan in 2:35.20. 

The Splash & dash 50 Freestyle saw the top Comet finisher Isabel Lee place 2nd in 28.10. The Diving event was a close contest as freshman Jade Friedlis was able to place 2nd with a season best score of 160.35. Sophomore Katie Schlagel placed 3rd and senior Maggie Mullins placed 4th. 

The 100 Butterfly was a wire to wire win for Lola Mull as she recorded a Division 1 State qualifying time of 59.73. The 100 Freestyle was a 1-2-3 sweep for the Comets with Grace Weston placing 1st in 55.28 and Alyssa Rainsberger placing 2nd and senior Cameron Magee placing 3rd. 

Abby Ford returned to win her 2nd event of the night with a state qualifying time of 5:15.81 in the 500 Freestyle. Freshman Allie Diller placed 2nd with a time of 6:04.62. 

The 2nd relay of the evening was the 200 Freestyle Relay and the team of Dani Ries, junior Chloe Willobee, sophomore Amelia Hofmeister & Olivia Vanderlaan pull away late to claim the win in a time of 1:51.48. 

The 100 Backstroke was another 1-2 finish for the Comets as Grace Weston won her second event of the night and Nicole Stensen swam to her second runner up finish of the night. The 100 Breaststroke was another win for Lola Mull as she swam to a time of 1:11.85. 

With the win the team moves to 1-0 on the young season. The team is next in action this weekend at the DeWitt Invitational on Saturday September 8th.
