Announcements and Important Events
The varsity Girls Water Polo team continued post season play this weekend this time at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor for the East Regional Tournament. After two days of tough play the Comets emerged victorious and staked claim to the program’s first ever Regional Championship.
On Friday evening the Comets took their first crack of the season at the team that defeated them in the Regional Final last season, #7 Ann Arbor Huron. On this night the #1 ranked Comets were not to be denied as they simultaneously punched their ticket to the State Tournament and passage to the second round of the regional tournament via a 14-7 win over the River Rats. The Comets blitzed Huron early as they jumped out to an 8-1 halftime lead thanks to senior captain Isabel Lee & her 3 first half goals. In the end Lee would end up with 7 goals for the game to go with her 2 assists and 2 steals. Fellow senior Anah Stahelin had a big game as well with 2 goals & 2 assists on 100% shooting from the field. Junior Lola Mull kicked in 3 goals, 6 assists and 7 steals to stuff the stat sheet. Senior goalie Elena Sierra-Clemares only played 3 quarters but that was enough to log 8 saves against 2 goals allowed.
On Saturday the Comets had two games on the schedule. Awaiting Grand Ledge in the semi final was the Saline Hornets. Defense was the name of the game once more as the Comets grinded out a 7-1 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter before punching their ticket to the Regional Final, 7-3. Sierra-Clemares allowed just 1 goal & made 6 saves before exiting for a much deserved rest in the 4th period. Offensively the team had an extremely balanced attack as Mull, Lee and junior Grace Weston each scored a pair of goals. Rounding out the scoring was junior Jordan Haywood as she tallied 1 goal to go along with 2 steals.
Matching up in the finals was the #6 ranked and hosting Skyline Eagles. Senior leadership was in full effect in the championship game as co-captains Lee & Stahelin combined to score 6 goals en route to the schools first ever Regional Championship by a final score of 11-3. Sierra-Clemares completed a terrific weekend in cage as she allowed 2 goals against 6 saves. Weston & Mull each scored 2 goals and senior Abby Ford scored her first goal of the weekend as well. Senior Cameron Magee capped a great weekend defensively with 6 steals.
Next up the squad will make its second consecutive appearance at the State Championship Tournament May 31 & June 1st at Zeeland High School. The top ranked Comets will tangle with a very tough #9 East Kentwood team at 6:30pm on May 31st.
