Announcements and Important Events
ast weekend the Grand Ledge Varsity Girls Water Polo Team competed at East Lansing High School for the District 3 Championship Tournament.
The district top seeded & #1 team in the state of Michigan Comets lived up to their billing as they sailed to 3 straight wins and their 2nd straight District Championship.
Friday evening the team squared off with the Mason Bulldogs with the opportunity to qualify for this weeks Regional Tournament Championship Tournament on the line. With 7 goals in the 1st frame the girls jumped on top and never looked back en route to a 14-6 victory and berth in the Regional tournament. Junior Grace Weston & senior captain Isabel Lee led the team in scoring with 4 goals each & junior Lola Mull chipped in 3 goals and 5 assists. Senior Cameron Magee led the way defensively with 5 steals.
On Saturday morning the Comets locked up with the hosts from the combined team of Holt High School & East Lansing High School. A dominant 1st half performance from senior Elena Clemares-Sierra in goal staked the squad to a 5-0 halftime advantage. Weston again led the team in scoring, this time with 5 goals. Defense carried the day however and the Comets walked away with an 11-5 win.
Awaiting the team in the District Championship game on Saturday evening was area rival Okemos. The #4 state ranked Chiefs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but the Comets quickly rebounded to lead 6-4 at halftime. The team was buoyed by Isabel Lee and her 5 second period goal scoring outburst on her way to scoring 7 goals in the game. Sierra-Clemares was again brilliant from her goalie position as she registered 16 saves. In the end the combination of tenacious defense and steady offense was too much for the Chiefs as the team claimed the District Title by a score of 11-8.
Grand Ledge advances as the number 1 seed in the East Regional Tournament and will take on the #7 ranked River Rats from Ann Arbor Huron at 6:30pm at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor. A win there will not only advance the Comets in the tournament but also guarantee the team a 2nd consecutive berth in the State Final Tournament.
