Varsity Softball Has Successful Start to Open the Season

The Grand Ledge Varsity girls' softball team has had a very good first month of the Spring season, accumulating a 7-2 record in non-league action.

The Comets knocked off Ionia in both games of a double header on April 22nd with 12-5 and 12-2 wins on the road.

On Saturday, April 20th Grand Ledge participated in the Mt. Pleasant Tournament against some very strong competition, scoring a victory over Mt. Pleasant while losing close games to Grand Blanc and Clare.

The defending CAAC Blue champs opened their season with a double header sweep against Gaylord at home, winning the first game 10-2 and the nightcap 14-10.

In the first game Nina Bennett was outstanding on the mound, allowing only two runs while striking out 10 Blue Devils. 

Jayden Deibel led the way for the Comets with three hits including a double while knocking in three runs while teammate Shaelyn Sage had a double with three hits and knocked in two runs. Maddy Merideth had a pair of hits and plated three runners.

In the second game Maddy Merideth got the win, striking out eight batters over seven innings. 

Maddy helped her cause at the plate with three hits and three RBI while Deibel had two hits and two RBI. Lauren Edlin added a pair of singles to go with three RBI. Liv Wilson knocked in two runs with a triple.

Grand Ledge opened CAAC Blue play on April 17th with a double header sweep of East Lansing.

The Comets rolled to a 19-0 victory in the first game, riding the strong pitching of Bennett. The GL senior walked only one batter and struck out eight in five innings of work. 

Taylor Piper led the charge offensively for the Comets with three hits and five RBI while Sage had another big game at the plate with a double in two hits with four RBI. Merideth had three hits while Bryn Wison and Jessa Powers each had a pair of hits.

In the second game the Comets won 8-2 in five innings. The game was called due to weather after five innings.

Merideth fanned seven batters and walked no one to earn the pitching win. Sage, Deibel and Edlin all had two hits for the Comets, including a double and triple for Deibel.

Grand Ledge is back home on Thursday, April 25th at 4:00 p.m. for a home double header against CAAC Blue rival Waverly.
