Elizabeth Maurer Wins Regional Title to Advance to MHSAA State Gymnastics Finals

Grand Ledge Varsity Gymnastics hosted area schools in the Region 2 Championship event on March 2, 2019.  Eleven area schools represented by 110 gymnasts came together and competed for the opportunity to move on to the MHSAA State gymnastics championship event to be held at Rockford High School.

Although the season was full of growth and increasing scores, the Grand Ledge Gymnastics team’s season concluded at Regionals.  A team score of 137.575 had the Comets finishing in sixth place.  Heading to State meet from Region 2 are the three top scoring teams: Fowlerville/Byron/Perry/Pinckney, Howell and Linden/Fenton/Lake Fenton. Fourth place Hartland also will be headed to States after receiving the wildcard placement.

Individually, gymnasts needed to meet a qualifying score over the regular season four times on each event to be able to compete at the Regional event.  Grand Ledge qualified four gymnasts who were eligible to compete All Around at Regionals: Emily Crofut, Elizabeth Maurer, Emma Olds and Amina Vakili.  Additionally, Amanda Gatewood and Isabel Tenniswood qualified on Vault, Jaydin Kyre and Sydney Moore qualified on floor and Isabel also made it to beam regionals.  Unfortunately, injury prevented several gymnasts from competing in their qualified berths.

The Comet team persevered despite injuries and improved their team score by almost two points from their earlier in the season best score.  Additionally, several gymnasts posted their highest scores of the season: Sydney Moore on floor, Emily Crofut on bars and All Around, Amina Vakili on Bars and Beam and Elizabeth Maurer on Bars and All Around.

To move on to compete at the state level a gymnast must place at Regionals in the top eight on an individual event or the top six in the all-around competition.

One Comet gymnast will be headed to the State championship meet.  Sophomore Elizabeth Maurer ended the meet in first place all around with a personal best score of 37.175.  On individual events she placed first on Bars (9.075), Beam (9.425) and Floor (9.475) and third place on Vault (9.15).   Elizabeth will head to Rockford High School on March 9 to represent Grand Ledge Varsity Gymnastics and compete for an individual placement.
